Without these devices, some individuals would be unable to interact with others and share their feelings, thoughts, ideas, observations, wants, and most importantly, needs. • A backup/secondary form of communication or communication helper: Some use AAC to be understood by less familiar people when their spoken speech is not understood due to severe phonological disorders or childhood apraxia of speech. Others use AAC to help them overcome social anxiety and selective mutism. AAC is also used for people who have difficulty with formulating new ideas and thoughts AAC is NOT: • Quitting spoken communication; more often than not, AAC often increases spoken words • A quick fix • Only for older kids.
