Some examples incude: • A child's primary form of communication: AAC enables individuals to communicate with those in his/her world. Without these devices, some individuals would be unable to interact with others and share their feelings, thoughts, ideas, observations, wants, and most importantly, needs. • A backup/secondary form of communication or communication helper: Some use AAC to be understood by less familiar people when their spoken speech is not understood due to severe phonological disorders or childhood apraxia of speech. Others use AAC to help them overcome social anxiety and selective mutism. AAC is also used for people who have difficulty with formulating new ideas and thoughts AAC is NOT: • Quitting spoken communication; more often than not, AAC often increases spoken words • A quick fix • Only for older kids. Research indicates that there are NO set prerequisite skills needed for children in order to use AAC; children of all ages and stages can benefit from some form of AAC (high or low tech).
